Treated & Untreated Crop
Frederic Hiam case study
Powered by Calor LPG

The Greenburner is an organic and environmentally efficient method of haulm and green top desiccation applicable to a range of fruit and vegetable production. It is also extremely effective in pre-emergence weeding and soil sterilisation prior to seed drilling.

With increasing consumer resistance to the use of acid and chemicals for burning off green vegetation, there is a need for a better system that meets modern environmental demands.

The Greenburner burns LPG in its vapour stage at the nozzle, this gives a more direct and controlled flame. This flame combined with a special heat resistant mesh and Insulation gives the burner a 2 stage heat effect the first being that of the flame from the burner the second being the pro-longed infra-red heat given off by the mesh within the canopy of the Greenburner. In working conditions this flame creates a constant heat of 850°C under the canopy of the Greenburner, as it passes over the crop.

To ensure optimum performance the Greenburner uses a hydraulically powered air curtain at the rear of the machine. This provides three functions:

  1. primarily to prevent heat loss at the rear of the machine,
  2. to provide an oxygen supply to the burner nozzles
  3. ensure an even airflow under the canopy.

The key to the Greenburner's effectiveness is that the flames from the burners heat an expanded metal mesh under the canopy. This emits infrared heat at a very high temperature, which rapidly heats the cells of the vegetation being treated. As a consequence, when the Greenburner passes over the crop, the cell walls rupture, and this prevents the plant from photosynthesising, therefore it will wither and die within a matter of hours.

The results of the Greenburner can be seen immediately with the crop turning a different shade of green as the cell walls break down. The test for whether the crop has been successfully killed off is the "fingerprint test" i.e. squeeze the plant between thumb and forefinger, if a fingerprint is left, the weed has been exposed to enough heat to kill it.

After only a few hours the crop begins to die off and turn brown as shown. The Greenburner is also extremely effective in pre-emergence weeding prior to seed drilling.
